Norway caught in the oil price collapse

While oil companies like Norway state-controlled Equinor can still break even on large oil fields like the new Johan Sverdrup, oil prices below USD 40 can spook other companies with higher offshore production costs, and discourage more oil exploration. That in turn can strangle Norway important oil service sector as well.

  • Why do farmers grow oil seed rape?
  • Farmers grow oil seed rape as part of a ‘rotation’, which means that they rarely grow the same crop in the same field every year. It is known therefore as a ‘break crop’ as the field takes a break from being used to grow cereals such as wheat. This helps to prevent pests and diseases from building up and being carried from one crop to another.
  • What is oilseed rape?
  • Bright yellow fields of oilseed rape have become a feature of the British countryside only within living memory. It produces one of the most popular vegetable oils, but, grown as a monoculture over vast tracts of farmland, its impact on the environment, biodiversity and even some people’s health leaves a lot to be desired.
  • Why is rapeseed oil so popular?
  • Since then its acreage has steadily increased and over the past decade the popularity of rapeseed oil has soared. It has lower amounts of saturated fat than other cooking oils and relatively high levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fat, adding to its popularity. Rape is a high input, high output break crop.
  • Is rapeseed oil environmentally friendly?
  • Through speaking to farmers, it is clear that the supply chain of conventionally produced British rapeseed oil is neither traceable nor particularly environmentally friendly. And there are other problems with the crop too. Many people claim to be allergic to rape pollen and suffer weeks of unpleasant symptoms every spring when it is in flower.
  • Where is oil seed rape grown?
  • Part of the mustard family of plants, oil seed rape is grown across Europe, Canada and Australia, as well as in the United States, China, India and Pakistan. What is it used for?
  • How rapeseed oil is processed?
  • The processing facility only mechanically presses the UK rapeseed and physically refines the subsequent crude oil produced into the finished product. This differs totally from all the other UK processing facilities that use the hydrocarbon hexane to solvent extract the maximum amount of rapeseed oil from the seed.
